What your converter does
Catalytic converters take harmful byproducts in your vehicle’s exhaust and convert these elements to less harmful chemicals. The dangerous byproducts are hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO). The actual process of the conversion does require an understanding of chemistry, but the results are simple.
CO and HC are converted into carbon dioxide (CO2) and vaporized water (H2O). NOx is broken down into three elements, CO2, nitrogen (N2) and H2O. While many other components of the exhaust system are designed to reduce noise for example, a muffler, the catalytic converter is designed to reduce pollution.
Catalytic converters were also responsible for the “rotten egg” odor that was often noticed in exhaust gas. The reduction of sulfur in fuels and improvements in converter construction has greatly reduced this problem.
What can cause your converter to fail?
Years ago, damage to a catalytic converter was common if leaded gasoline was used in the fuel system. With leaded gasoline no longer being readily available in the US, this reason for failure has been eliminated. Other factors included certain gasoline or oil additives, most of the damaging additives are no longer sold. The failure of modern converters now normally occurs due to age. If you use your vehicle under heavy loads for extended periods the converter may experience premature failure.
